The Kelp Holdfast

The kelp holdfast is one of Creation’s wonders. A tidepooler’s treasure chest. Our magnificent, towering kelp forests are anchored into the seafloor with what’s called a “holdfast.” Through ocean currents, storms, and turbulence, the kelp remains anchored into the earth. They look like roots, but don’t supply the kelp with any nutrients. Instead, they serve as neighborhood nurseries - protective habitats for young marine critters like brittle stars and snails and sea hares. It’s said that a hundred or so creatures can be found in one kelp holdfast. What can we learn from the example of kelp? When we are anchored, anchored in grace, we too create spaces for life to flourish. For new creation. Open space for other beings to dwell in and flourish.

Let us pray that we may serve as members of a community. That we may protect those seeking safety. That we may serve as healers, that we would practice hospitality. That we may become God’s dwelling.
